Sober Curious Just Became 'A Thing'

You can't avoid it these days, or so it seems. Sober Curious is getting mentioned everywhere. But, how did something formally considered to be 'boring' become the new 'cool'.

There are Sober Curious clubs, Sober Curious early-morning dancing bashes. There are even Sober Curious social media stars with millions of followers.

The amount of alcohol consumers around the world has reduced by almost 5 percentage points since 2000. The Drink Information Group states alcohol revenues have dropped for several years straight. This doesn't appear to be slowing down anytime soon.

Big Alcohol is starting to take the Sober Curious movement seriously! Diageo (the planet's second-largest alcohol producer) just financed a nonalcoholic business called Seed-lip.

In towns such as New York and Los Angeles, it is standard for dining establishments to have unique nonalcoholic beverage lists. Google searches with the word "mocktail" are up considerably. Plus, internet journals like the Temper have debuted to defiantly promote the advantages of a clean living style.

Sober Curious Is Not A Fad

This is not a trend buoyed by dependency and rehabilitation tales. The millennial and Gen Z-driven craze is viewed as a key component of a growing health trend. Young people want to have social events less concentrated on drinking (and the following mornings less fuzzed by consequences).

This in addition to a transformation toward living clean and sober as a general default.

Fantastic, but it's not all roses! It's certainly not inexpensive to go dry. Sober Curious drinkers will still need to invest a hefty $12.50 a pop for an AF mocktail. Big bucks for just a little fruity shot they might down in a couple of minutes.

Pubs and dining establishments might spend more creating sober alternatives. Mocktails and alcohol-free beverages tend to use a lot of fresh ingredients, with elaborate essences and mixtures too. Big Alcohol is worried and is closely monitoring the Sober Curious movement.

They are trying to work out if it's a fad or something that's going to have legs in the long run.

Quitting Drinking Is No Longer A Taboo

Not so long back quitting drinking was something you kept to yourself. Firstly, because drinking buddies can often ridicule and bully those trying to leave the loop. Also, because telling people you are giving up alcohol seems to imply you are a terribly broken alcoholic or something.

No so, choosing not to drink poison for fun is a powerful and entirely logical decision.

Sober Curious And Completely Dry

Sharelle Klaus, the creator of COMPLETELY DRY, was among the initial adopters. She started the business in 2005 after sobriety throughout 4 pregnancies left her feeling left out on special occasions.

She initially launched her line of nonalcoholic drinks with "culinary-inspired tastes" in bistros in The United States. Sommeliers were at first snobbish, consigning COMPLETELY DRY to the classification of soft drink. However, gourmet chefs were responsive.

The beverages are now marketed countrywide in significant shopping establishments in ten flavors.

People Are Getting Tired Of Drinking

She claims that over fifty percent of United States drinkers say they 'd like to consume less alcohol. This number increases to two-thirds for millennial consumers.

"Mental well being is becoming a much greater conversation point. It's about maintaining that edge and that precision," Klaus claims. She suggests nonalcoholic social drinking may help fight the dissociation impacts of mobile phones and social networks.

"It's about being a bit more available to your friends."

Non-alcoholic lagers, ciders, and beer, which chugged along as an 'also ran' for many years, has seen a revival. From craft makers to big brands likeHeineken, which in February released a nonalcoholic ale called 0.0.

Today, no-alcohol beverages represent only 5 percent of the draft beer industry. But marketing research suggests that Sober Curious maybe a $7 billion dollars global industry in about 5 years. Revenues from non-alcoholic beverages could pass alcohol sales within 6-7 years.

This Is Why Big Alcohol Is Worried

Only a few years ago the range of alcohol-free beers and wines was limited to a very disappointing and small range. It always used to feel that AF products were an afterthought, a little like 'the vegan' option on a restaurant menu. Something they have to do but don't have any passion for.

There is a good reason for this. People who drink alcohol nearly always end up drinking more than they intended to. This is because of the drug interferes with the part of the brain responsible for making sound decisions.

Alcohol-Free drinks don't have this mind-bending, pocket stretching side effect. Good for the consumer but bad for the bars and alcohol producers.

Thankfully, Sober Curious is now getting so big that the alcohol companies have no choice but to sit up and take this seriously.

Fantastic News

This change in mindset is fantastic news for all problem drinkers. So many people are miserable with their drinking but they worry that quitting drinking will make them a social outcast. Not anymore, drinking is starting to go the way of smoking, and about time too.
