That BBC Interview About Alcoholism
Being a British ex-drinker and now expert on all things related to alcohol addiction. In 2015 the BBC invited me to talk about alcoholism and how to stop drinking.
I recorded the interview with James Piekos of BBC Radio Humberside in the North East of England. It was intended to be included in the morning show’s features on New Years Resolutions.
I was 2000 miles away from the UK when the piece was broadcast but I managed to listen online, I was pretty happy with how it went.
But I wasn’t prepared for what happened next!
James told me that after the broadcast aired the switchboard in the studio went crazy. Not with people wanting more information about how to deal with alcoholism but to complain about the IDIOT that the BBC had allowed on air.
‘How dare he tell us we should give up one of our very few pleasures’
The backroom staff at the radio station spent the next thirty minutes fielding calls from upset listeners, furious about what I had said.
I know that they all feel entirely justified in complaining and I know they believe I am 100% wrong about alcohol.
BUT you only have to change the substance to see how crazy the situation is!
If I had instead criticized Apples, do you think the radio station phones would have rung off the wall?
Unlikely, but then apples are not the second most addictive substance on planet earth, are they?
Apples are not packaged into deceptively attractive containers and then deviously advertised as though consuming them makes you more fun, sexy, attractive, sophisticated or any of the other nonsense the alcohol manufacturers spew out.
The Alcoholism Interview on The BBC that Got Me Into BIG Trouble
The harsh reality is… alcohol kills 2.5 million people every year. Apples kill about 273 – but it’s alcohol that we defend!
I am no saint, I used to drink two bottles of wine a night. The only difference is I now stand outside the loop looking in. I am here to tell you that life is 5000% better here and now I want to help you to come join me.
If you are finally ready to step outside the insanity and get this attractively packaged poison out of your life.
