Diet Can Help Sobriety
Eating healthy isn’t just good for the body — it’s good for the mind.
For a recovering addict, both of these things are important. According to experts, alcohol causes to excrete larger quantities of nutrients. This means a recovering alcoholic will have to take more in to replace what was lost.
But getting sober is difficult mentally, too. Giving yourself the best mental health possible is giving yourself the best chance for success.
There are many easy steps you can take to get your diet under control to help sobriety today.
Cut out sugar and caffeine
It’s common to crave sugar or caffeine after getting sober. Your body got used to consuming all the sugar in alcohol, and some use caffeine as a different kind of “hit” than alcohol.
But relying on these can be dangerous to your blood sugar levels — and after you “come down” from the high these things give you, it could be harder to stay sober.
There is also some evidence that both sugar and caffeine cause anxiety, among other mental health issues.
This can make your journey to getting sober more difficult, so try and cut these things out as much as possible to help sobriety.
Eat vitamin-rich foods
Alcohol often causes undernourishment. Because of this, you should opt for foods such as fruits, vegetables, nuts, salads, fish, legumes, eggs and chicken. This will help build up the nutrients you lost.
You might also consider taking supplements to help you, but this is something you should discuss with a nutritionist or physician first.
Follow the food pyramid
- Vegetables, especially leafy green ones (as those are particularly rich in vitamins, which as stated above are very important!)
- Fruits (Avocados are another great choice, as stated above, but other fruits are good as well)
- Oils and fats (Almonds and peanuts make a great snack that satisfy this craving!)
- Healthy whole grains (Things like cereal and whole grain bread are good choices)
- Meat, poultry, and fish (Lean meats will be the best choice for that, but poultry and fish are good, too!)
- Dairy products (Opt for skim or low-fat milk)
Processed foods can hinder the liver repair, which is very important during early sobriety. Try to cut them out of your diet as much as possible, opting for more natural choices.
Aiming for whole foods and organic options will be sure to limit your processed food intake.
This will mean that you’ll wind up having to cool a lot, but this can be beneficial — for many, cooking is a productive activity that reduces stress and keeps the mind busy!
Getting your mind on other things can be a very good way to help sobriety.
There’s nothing wrong with snacking in between meals — in fact, some experts suggest eating six small meals a day, rather than three big meals, so that you don’t ever feel too hungry or too full.
But when you snack, it’s important to eat the right kinds of snacks. Some suggestions are popcorn without butter, pretzels, or vegetable sticks.
With these tips, you can be well on your way to a happier, healthier life of sobriety.
